The Crochet Club

crochet (krō shā´) n. needlework in which loops of thread or yarn are interwoven with a hooked needle.

The Crochet Club was founded in 2011-12 by faculty member, Mrs. Hickman. Mrs. Hickman learned how to crochet at the age of 9, and she enjoys sharing this beautiful form of needlework with Shafer students.

“Many of us had grandmothers who sat in a favorite chair, with a ball of yarn at their feet and a crochet hook in their hand, crocheting hats, afghans and baby blankets. I wanted to share this skill that has given me so much joy! Founding the Crochet Club seemed like the perfect way," says Ms. Hickman.

There are many educational benefits to crocheting! It teaches higher level thinking skills, self-discipline and even math and problem solving skills! Mrs. Hickman says the club also helps students with social and communication skills and builds self confidence.

The Crochet Club meets on Thursdays from 2:45-3:45. The cost to join is $20 and includes a t-shirt.

The students who are invited to join finished their 6th or 7th grade year with a final year GPA of 3.75 or higher. Through the service projects, the members are able to see how maintaining a standard of excellence in their academic and personal lives can spill over to enrich the lives of those around them, which ultimately makes our world a better place.

Student Council

Members of the Shafer Middle School Student Council work diligently to represent the student body. Membership is determined by elections held during the fall (sixth grade) and spring (seventh and eighth grade) of each year.

Student Council members promote leadership, initiative, and self-motivation. Members are expected to maintain high standards of scholarship and citizenship.

Each year, members of the Council establish goals to better the school and serve the community. The Student Council sponsors dances and partners with the National Junior Honor Society to organize a fundraiser to assist the school in purchasing much-needed items.

Student Council meetings are held after school on the third Thursday of each month. Occasionally, a special meeting may need to be held before school.

The Yearbook Club

A highlight for any student is receiving the school Yearbook at the end of the school year! Shafer students are no different! Few realize, however, how much work goes into compiling the information and pictures that make the Yearbook so special.

Mrs. Clark, the sponsor of the Yearbook Club, does a fantastic job of choosing talented students to design the Yearbook. Members are interested in writing about school events, which involves good interviewing skills. They also need to have creative visual design skills. Club members work in small teams to design the Yearbook pages.

The Yearbook Club meets once a month after school.

Shafer Academic Team

Shafer Academic Team is open to all students who would like to grow academically in a fun and competitive way. For our teams to achieve growth and success, students need to commit to practice and independent study. Our team practice is every Monday after school until 4:15 PM. Teams consist of 4 students each and letters indicate the ranking of individual students. Students on team A are generally the most experienced and best players. The coach has the discretion to form the teams.

As members of the Sumner County Middle School Academic League, we practice with other teams once a month at various county middle schools. Traditionally, we compete in three NAQT Tournaments and two National Computer Competitions annually.
