Football

The Shafer Football Team is open to all 7th and 8th grade students.

Workouts for the 2023 season are currently in progress. Monday, Wednesay, Thursday every week from 3:00-5:00. Current 6th and 7th graders are allowed to participate. Paperwork should be picked up from Coach Overton in order to participate.
Spring Practice will start at the end of April and will end in the middle of May. 
The team will practice 2-3 days a week during the month of June and every day in July (M-F). There will be a two week dead period that starts June 24th and ends July 9th . Summer practices in July are mandatory. The first regular season game of 2023 is on August 8th . 
In 2022, we won more games that we have in nearly two decades. 2023 is going to be a year to remember! If you will be a 7th or 8th grade student in 23-24 school year, you don't want to miss out!

Coach Matt Overton: 

Coach Overton is a lifelong resident of Gallatin. He is a 2007 graduate of Gallatin High School where he lettered in three sports. He has played football at the semi-professional and professional levels. He is a 2014 graduate of Tennessee State University with a major in Exercise Science and a 2018 graduate of Union University with a Master of Arts in Education degree. Coach Overton spent 6 years coaching football at Gallatin High School before coming to Shafer.

Girls’ Basketball

The Shafer Lady Wave Basketball Team is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls. Try-outs are held by Coach Erica Stewart in May for rising 7th and 8th grade girls.Try-outs for rising 6th grade girls are held at the completion of the school year in June. Once try-outs are completed parents are given all necesary forms, including physical examination forms, that need to be on file for participation. 

Summer workouts are held throughout the week in June and July. In season practice begins daily in October and the 14-game schedule starts in November and concludes in January. 

Shafer Lady Wave

The 2021-2022 Shafer Lady Wave finished the regular season with an impresive 8-6 record, finishing tied for third in the conference. The season concluded with a record of 10-9 after losing in the quarterfinals at sections, which was the furthest the Shaer Lady Wave have advanced in 25 years.

Coach Erica Stewart

Coach Stewart is a 1998 graduate of Galesburg-Augusta High School where she earned 9 Varsity letters. She is a 3-time All-State tennis player and earned All-Conference honors in basketball and softball. She is a 2006 graduate of Murray State University. In 2015, Coach Stewart was inducted into the Galesburg-Augusta Athletic Hall of Fame for her athletic achievements. She has been a resident of Gallatin since 2004. 2021-2022 was Coach Stewart's first season as head coach at Shafer.

Boys’ Basketball


Boys’ Basketball is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys. Try-outs are held in May for rising 7th and 8th grade boys. Try outs for rising 6th grade boys are held at the completion of the school year. 

The team practices throughout the summer. Regular practice begins in October, and game schedule starts in November and runs through January.

Track


The track team is open to all 6th through 8th grade students. Try-outs are held at the end of February. At that time, parents are given an informational packet (which includes a form for the mandatory physical examination each player must receive).

The team practices throughout the spring and participates in 3-4 track meets, along with the county meet.

All students who participate in sports at Shafer Middle School must be passing his/her grade, have two or less In-School Suspensions and no Out-Of School Suspensions. A schedule will be posted on the website before the season begins.

 

Cheerleading


Cheerleading is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. All interested students must attend a two-day clinic prior to try-outs in February. At that time, parents are given an informational packet (which includes a form for the mandatory physical examination each player must receive).

The Cheerleading Squad practices during the month of May and will attend a three-day camp in June. They also practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer. 

All students who participate in sports at Shafer Middle School must be passing his/her grade, have two or less In-School Suspensions and no Out-Of-School Suspensions.

The Cheerleading Squad cheers at all of the football and basketball games. A schedule will be posted on the website before the seasons begin
